Backflow Testing, Repair & Installation

Posted May 17th, 2007 by Craig Woolheater

Backflow devices are large components typically on main water lines of all irrigation systems and on all commercial industrial and multi-dwelling properties. They are designed to prevent water from reversing itself and returning to the city main lines once the water has entered the private property water lines.

Backflow devices are installed so the city can ensure no private line water contaminant can return to the main water line structure. Water could, without backflow prevention, be drawn backwards within the water pipes in the event a fire truck rapidly draws water from the hydrant causing a vacuum within the pipes. This can also happen if a main water line breaks.

Local water departments, cities and the state, in an effort to insure adequate protection against this back siphonage and the water supply, mandates the annual inspection of all backflows by a state certified backflow inspector.

Innerline Plumbing provides backflow testing in order to maintain a clean and safe potable water supply.

When operating properly, a backflow preventer allows water to flow into a connection but will not allow water to go back through the connection. This connection prevents backflow, or back siphoning, of water from the plumbing back into the City’s, or other entity’s, treated and potable water supply.

A backflow preventer should be tested regularly to ensure that the internal seals and other moving parts do not suffer corrosion and extensive wear, which would result in a malfunction of the connection. If water backflows into the public water system, it can pollute or taint the water within that system and make the water unsafe to drink.
